Sunbury dominates the Mens Northern Combine Road Masters Championship Race.
Monday, September 26, 2011 at 10:09PM Last Saturday at Broadford, Sunbury riders scored their best team result of the season, claiming 1st and 2nd in the 2011 Mens Northern Combine Road Masters Championship Race. In tough conditions over the 99km course, a race of attrition saw Daniel Abotomey take the win with Andrew Hutcheson 2nd. Pat McIntyre (5th), with Col Bell, Michael Skerritt and John Marcan, (9th, 10th, 11th) had 6 Sunbury riders in the top 11 places of 25 starters. Skerritt set the tone early with an attack in the first 30kms. He was eventually caught and other attacks followed. As the hills took their toll, Abotomey, Hutcheson, McIntyre and Bell were part of a selection of 8 until McIntyre and Bell fell 100 metres behind with 30kms to go. Working together they chased hard and managed to catch the leaders, before Bell once again fell back only to chase again solo and again catch the leading 6. The final 4kms saw Sunbury make the most of their numbers and take the initiative with McIntyre acting as the lead out, setting up Abotomey and Hutcheson to break from the group in the last km and battle for the win. Special mention to Peter Share, who after an interrupted season due to injury, rode strongly to complete the race. Congratulations also to James Butler who rode in the Elite race finishing in 19th position.
